In 1981, Eric Allen founded A-2 Chimney Sweeps in Amherst, Nova Scotia, initially operating it part-time while working as a truck driver. After his business partner left, Eric’s daughter Diane’s boyfriend, Greg McMasters, became his main helper, eventually marrying Diane and joining the family. The business passed to Greg after Eric’s death in 1999. Meanwhile, Greg and Diane’s children, Matthew, Vanessa, and Nicholas, became involved, with Matthew joining the business after a stint in the Navy. In 2003, after the closure of their employer, Blue Mist Pewter, Diane opened Vintage Stove and Fireplace with a government grant, starting in a small Amherst showroom. The business grew rapidly, earning Diane a Business of the Year award in 2006. Vintage expanded with locations in Truro (2007) and New Glasgow (2014), but by 2015, consolidated operations to the Truro location to serve northern Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick efficiently.
